One of the most common questions I hear as a wedding photographer is, “What time of the year should we get our engagement photos taken?” as well as “Is there a specific season we are supposed to choose?”
The answer is quite simple. WHENEVER you want!
I suggest to most couples to choose the season that reflects who they are most
If you are a boat and beach kind of person, the summer sounds like a great choice. If you enjoy cuddling by the fire and drinking hot chocolate, winter may be the best for you. You would want to choose a season that makes you feel ALIVE and resonates with your soul. When you feel good, that comes through in a photograph.
However, some couples choose to do their engagement in the opposite season their wedding will take place
Opposite season gives you the option to have a variety of photos throughout the year of your love story. Some couples feel as if they get a “2 for 1” look with the colorful leaves from the fall with their engagement photos and gorgeous bright green grasses in their wedding photos.
The simplest rule of thumb is keeping in mind how the weather may cooperate
Choosing an engagement session date in a transition season where there is more weather such as rain or snow could lead to some hiccups in scheduling. Be sure to keep this in mind and have a few rain dates in place if you would prefer a clear engagement session.
The fall and winter months come with more overcast days so if you are looking for glowing skies, spring or summer would be best for you! Although, playing in the rain or snow makes for some incredibly creative portraits!
Regardless of the season of the year, TIMING is the most important
Most engagement sessions will take place two hours before sunset for “golden hour” where the sun is getting low and creates a gorgeous warm golden light. Depending on the time of the year, the sun may set at 8:00pm or 6:00pm. Be sure to keep this in mind when choosing seasons and coordinating schedules. A half day at work might be in order to catch your favorite season and the right light!
Last but not least, celebrate your engagement!
Scheduling your engagement soon after you get engaged will give you that “blissful just engaged madly in love vibe” but if you are unable to schedule quickly, your engagement is still meant to feel EXCITING and deserves a celebration! Plan a date night following your engagement session to make the most of of your styled hair and makeup as well as your dressy outfits!
